Stephen Joseph

Stephen Joseph was the founder of the Library Theatre in Scarborough in 1955, where the UK's first professional theatre-in-the-round company was formed. The company continues to this day at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. Stephen was a British theatre pioneer and is regarded by Alan Ayckbourn as the most significant influence in his life.

This section of the playwright - compiled and researched by the SJT Archivist Simon Murgatroyd and Dr Paul Elsam - explores the life and legacy of this key figure in British theatre history in the 20th century.
