New Writing: The Library Theatre
In 1955, Stephen Joseph founded the Library Theatre at Scarborough Public Library: which became home to the UK's first professional theatre-in-the-round company.Stephen's intent was to support new writing and new writers; an ethos which continues to this day with the company. Between 1955 and 1976, before the company moved to its second home the Stephen Joseph Theatre in the Round, the Library Theatre produced 154 professional plays of which 74 were new plays.
