Since Stephen Joseph founded the UK's first professional theatre-in-the-round company in Scarborough in 1955, it has been housed in three venues: Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre, the Stephen Joseph Theatre In The Round and the Stephen Joseph Theatre. Theatre in the Round at the Library Theatre was the company's first home in Scarborough from 1955 to 1976 and was home to the UK's first professional theatre-in-the-round company.

The company moved to a former school in 1976 and stayed in this 'temporary' home for 20 years, gaining a national reputation for its commitment to new writing.

The SJT is the company's first purpose-designed home. It was converted from Scarborough's former Odeon cinema and opened in 1996.
